The Government of Ghana has formally protested what it describes as the “inhumane and traumatic” treatment of Ghanaian travellers by Israeli authorities at Ben Gurion International Airport, and says it is considering immediate reciprocal action.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 10, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was “appalled” by recent incidents in which Ghanaian nationals were detained or deported upon arrival in Israel without justifiable cause.
According to the Ministry, seven Ghanaian travellers including four Members of Parliament attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference in Tel Aviv were detained on December 7 and subjected to hours of questioning. They were released only after “more than five hours of strenuous diplomatic intervention.”
Three other Ghanaian travellers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.
The Government described the actions of Israeli authorities as “unfair, provocative, and unacceptable,” adding that the conduct was inconsistent with the longstanding cordial relations between the two countries.
The Ministry also rejected Israel’s explanation that the treatment stemmed from Ghana’s alleged non-cooperation in earlier deportation cases, calling the justification “totally untenable.” It stressed that Ghana’s Embassy in Tel Aviv had acted fully within international law.
Officials of the Israeli Embassy in Accra are expected to be summoned for an official protest, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana says it is weighing appropriate reciprocal measures and will pursue the matter “in the strongest possible terms.”
