The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has announced an investigation into reports that some shipping lines have imposed an emergency conflict surcharge on cargo in Ghana.
In a statement, Prof. Gyampo said the Authority has not officially received any notification from shipping lines regarding the introduction of such a surcharge.
Shipping lines, he explained, are owners of vessels and are responsible for issuing their own charges, while the Ghana Shippers Authority regulates only the local charges applied by these companies within the country.
The CEO noted that the Authority first became aware of the alleged surcharge through a complaint circulating on social media late Tuesday night.
According to him, the issue has been taken seriously and immediate steps have been initiated to verify the claim.
“We have not officially been informed about any Emergency Conflict Surcharge of any shipping line,” Prof. Gyampo stated.
He added that he had personally contacted the individual who raised the complaint online and requested documentary evidence to support the allegation.
Prof. Gyampo said that as of Wednesday morning, the Authority had already initiated investigations into the matter to determine the facts and take appropriate action if necessary.
He emphasized that the Ghana Shippers Authority has neither imposed nor collected any such surcharge, distancing the regulator from the reported charges.
The Authority is expected to provide further updates once its investigation is completed.
