The Upper East Region has discovered significant gold deposits in seven out of the fifteen districts, a development expected to boost economic activity in the area.
This revelation was made by the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, during an interaction with journalists at the proposed Bolgatanga Airport site on Friday.
According to the Minister, the discovery presents a major economic opportunity, and the construction of the Bolgatanga Airport would play a critical role in facilitating the transportation of gold and other minerals.
“Out of the 15 municipal and district assemblies, about seven have gold deposits. This means there’s business to do,” Atanga stated.
He further emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, particularly the airport, to support the growing mining sector and enhance security for gold transport.
“When mining activities increase, we must ensure there are faster and safe ways to transport minerals to the national market. Armed robberies on the roads remain a challenge, so an airport will provide a more secure alternative.”
The Minister also highlighted the region’s strategic position, noting that an airport in Bolgatanga would not only benefit the mining sector but also strengthen trade links with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Togo.
“Upper East is a gateway to Burkina Faso and Togo. A functional airport here will be an economic game-changer,” he added.
He called on stakeholders to support the establishment of the airport, stressing its potential to unlock economic growth in the region.
