The government has introduced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing educational opportunities, economic empowerment and religious welfare for the Muslim community in the Upper East Region.
The announcement was made by the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations at the Mobil Park in Bolgatanga, organized by the Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaah community.
In his address, Akamugri reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving education in zongo communities by facilitating the accreditation of Islamic schools such as the Institute of Islamic Research. This move, he said, would ensure the training of more Arabic teachers to enhance quality Islamic education.
“As part of our efforts to bridge the educational gap, the government will provide scholarships for underprivileged Muslim students pursuing studies in critical fields such as Law, Medicine, Engineering and ICT,” he stated.
A major highlight of the Minister’s speech was the government’s commitment to empowering Muslim women. He revealed that Ghc51.3 million has been allocation as seed capital for the newly established National Women’s Development Bank.
“This initiative is a game-changer for Muslim women in business. It will provide tailored financial support to enhance livelihoods and economic participation,” Akamugri noted.
In addition, the government has set up the Syaaya Fund, a financial support scheme aimed at providing start-up capital for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in zongo communities. The Minister emphasized that this intervention would stimulate business growth and improve economic stability in these communities.
On the issue of Hajj pilgrimage, the Minister announced a significant reduction in Hajj fares from Gh75,000 to Gh62,000, to make the sacred journey more affordable for Ghana Muslims. He also revealed that a state-of-the-art permanent Hajj Village is under construction in Accra to provide dignified accommodation for pilgrims.
“We recognize the importance of Hajj in the lives of our Muslim brothers and sisters. The government remains committed to ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience for all pilgrims,” he assured.
Akamugri also addressed regional security concerns, urging the Muslim leadership to work together in combating violent extremism and substance abuse among the youth.
“The safety of our communities is a collective responsibility. We must strengthen our communal security networks and uphold the moral values that guide us,” he stressed.
He further reaffirmed the government’s dedication to peace, especially in conflict-prone areas like Bawku and commended the Muslim community for their support during the recent elections.
“As a government, we value the unity and cooperation of our Muslim brothers and sisters. Let us continue to work together to promote peace and development in the region,” he said.
The Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations brought together religious leaders, traditional authorities and members of the Muslim community, fostering a sense of unity and reflection. The Minister concluded by extending warm Eid Mubarak greetings on behalf of the government and the chiefs of region, calling for continued unity and adherence to the virtues of Ramadan.
