The government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Township and its surrounding communities in the Savannah Region, following rising tensions linked to a land dispute in the area.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, announced the directive in a statement on Wednesday, stating that the curfew will run from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, effective immediately, until further notice.
The decision, he said, was taken on the advice of the National Security Council and formalized by Executive Instrument.
Authorities say the measure aims to avert further security threats and restore calm in the district, which has recently been rocked by violent confrontations over land ownership.
As part of the restrictions,” residents are reminded that c”arrying firearms, ammunition, or any offensive weapon is strictly prohibited, with offenders facing arrest and prosecution.Two or more persons are not allowed to ride together on motorbikes throughout the day. Wearing of war regalia in public is banned.
The Interior Minister further appealed to chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and use peaceful, non-violent means in addressing their grievances.
“The government urges the people to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” the statement read.
The curfew comes amid heightened security operations in the Savannah Region as authorities seek to prevent escalation of long-standing land-related disputes.
