The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has officially launched the 42nd National Farmers’ Day, with a renewed commitment by the John Dramani Mahama administration to transform Ghana’s agricultural sector through sustained investment aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers and strengthening national food security.
Launching the celebration in Accra on Tuesday, the Minister unveiled the theme, “Our Farmers, Our Food, Our Future,” describing it as a clear reflection of the vital role farmers play in ensuring the country’s food security, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
Mr. Opoku said the theme underscores the fact that Ghana’s future is inseparable from the success of its farmers, stressing that investing in agriculture today is an investment in the nation’s future.
The launch comes as the Mahama administration continues to channel significant resources into the agricultural sector through policies and interventions designed to boost production, enhance food security, increase farmers’ incomes, and modernize farming across the country. The government maintains that revitalizing agriculture remains central to its broader economic transformation agenda.
The Minister announced that this year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration will take place on Friday, December 4, 2026, following a week-long programme of activities. The celebrations will include a National Agricultural Fair from November 30 to December 4, before climaxing with the Grand Durbar and National Farmers’ Awards Ceremony.
He noted that the annual celebration is not only an opportunity to honour the hard work and resilience of Ghanaian farmers but also a reminder that no nation can achieve sustainable development while neglecting agriculture.
According to Mr. Opoku, building a self-sufficient Ghana requires sustained support for farmers, who remain the backbone of the country’s food systems and a critical pillar of national development.
