The government is set to commence Phase 3 of the Appiatse Reconstruction Project with the remaining GH¢52 million from the total GH¢112 million donated towards the rebuilding of the disaster-hit community, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has announced.
During a working visit to Appiatse in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, the Minister disclosed that close to GH¢60 million has already been spent on Phases 1 and 2.
These earlier phases delivered permanent homes and essential infrastructure for most of the displaced residents following the deadly explosion in January 2022.
“Phase 3 will complete the vision of a modern, resilient Appiatse,” the Minister said, adding that ongoing engagements with traditional leaders aim to secure additional land for continued development.

However, local authorities raised concerns about unfinished work and overlooked essentials from the earlier phases.
Municipal Chief Executive for Prestea Huni Valley, Hon. Matthew Ayeh, cited several structural issues, including leaking septic tanks, unplastered walls, and substandard finishes in some buildings. He also highlighted the absence of critical community amenities such as a CHPS compound, a market, and a community center.
In response, the Lands Minister assured residents that all outstanding defects and missing facilities would be addressed in the upcoming phase.
“Phase 3 is not just about more houses. It’s about building a complete community—safe, dignified, and equipped with the necessary social infrastructure,” he emphasized.
The Appiatse disaster, which occurred in January 2022, claimed several lives and displaced hundreds when a truck carrying explosives detonated. Since then, the government, with support from donors, has been working to rebuild the town as a model green community.
