A coalition of grassroots members and identifiable groups of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has called on the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to encourage Henry Kwabena Kokofu to contest for the position of Ashanti Regional Chairman ahead of the party’s next regional elections.
The appeal was made at a press briefing addressed by the groups, who said the impending exit of the current Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), creates the need for a capable successor to sustain the party’s dominance in the region.
Chairman Wontumi, who has led the party in the region for about 12 years, has announced his intention to contest for the National Chairmanship of the party, paving the way for new leadership at the regional level.
According to the group, Hon. Kokofu, a former Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Bantama Constituency Chairman, possesses the experience, humility, and unifying leadership qualities needed to lead the party in its strongest political stronghold.
They urged Dr. Bawumia to prevail upon Hon. Kokofu to reconsider his decision to contest for the General Secretary position and instead redirect his ambition toward the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship.
The groups argued that as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections, the Ashanti Region requires leadership that is approachable, hardworking, and capable of uniting all factions within the party to maximize electoral performance.
They also cited Hon. Kokofu’s role during the recent presidential primaries, noting that he actively supported Dr. Bawumia’s campaign in the Bantama Constituency and helped secure victory for him, despite strong opposition from supporters of Kennedy Agyapong.
According to the groups, Bantama, which is the hometown of Amofa Jantuah, Ashanti Regional Campaign Coordinator for Mr. Agyapong, was won by Dr. Bawumia through effective grassroots mobilisation led by Hon. Kokofu.
The groups further questioned the capacity of some other potential aspirants for the regional chairmanship, citing their inability to deliver significant votes for Dr. Bawumia during the primaries.
The statement was signed by Fred Appiah, spokesperson for the grassroots and identifiable groups of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, who expressed confidence that Hon. Kokofu’s leadership would unite the party and strengthen its chances of victory in the 2028 elections.
