The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations Samuel Narteh George has ordered the immediate shutdown of Gumah FM Station in Bawku.
This decisive action follows an emergency meeting held on February 11, 2025, where the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) conducted a thorough review of recent security developments in Bawku and parts of the North East Region.
The statement by the Ministry noted that Intelligence reports have revealed that Gumah FM Station has been exploited as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate tensions in the region.
The Ministry reveals that it’s directive is grounded in Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which empowers the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend or revoke frequency authorizations in the interest of national security, public order, or the public interest.
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has urged all media entities to operate responsibly and adhere strictly to their frequency authorization conditions, emphasizing the importance of media freedom that does not compromise national security.
