Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s Finance Minister, has identified several major ongoing infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region as government priorities, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to completing them by the end of 2028.
Speaking during the midyear budget presentation in Parliament, Dr. Forson listed Kumasi Roads and Drainage Extension, the modernization of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, and Kumasi Central Market Phase 2 as critical projects in the region.
The Finance Minister underscored the government’s focus on accelerating the completion of important development undertakings across the country.
He pointed out that priority was given to projects that are more than 70% complete to ensure efficient use of resources and timely commissioning.
“We aim to ensure that all the priority projects are completed and commissioned by the end of 2028,” Dr. Forson said, detailing a list of 24 flagship projects spanning roads, hospital upgrades, water supply, educational facilities, and renewable energy initiatives.
Among the comprehensive list, notable road construction efforts include the new bridge across the Volta River at Volivo, rehabilitation works on the Dome-Kitase Road, and ongoing development of the Tema-Aflao Road Project Phase 1.
In the Ashanti Region specifically, infrastructure expansion focuses on improving the Kumasi Roads and Drainage system alongside the Phase 2 expansion of the Kumasi Central Market, a significant commercial hub in the region.
Healthcare infrastructure also features prominently with the modernization of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, as well as projects targeting regional hospitals in Effia Nkwanta, Bolgatanga, and the construction of Central Medical Stores in Tema.
Additionally, the government is pushing forward with educational enhancements, including the establishment of a University of Environment and Sustainable Development at Bunso, nine new state-of-the-art Technical and Vocational Education Training Centres, and integrated e-learning laboratories for senior high schools.
Dr. Forson stressed adherence to budgetary discipline, noting that the scope of work for these projects would not be expanded beyond what has been agreed with international partners, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and bilateral creditors.
“The resumption of disbursements for the projects and the associated debt service are fully in line with our commitments under the bilateral debt restructuring and the IMF Programme,” Dr. Forson asserted, urging implementing agencies to strictly comply with these guidelines.
“Implementing agencies must take note and comply accordingly,” Dr. Forson added.
