Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended the policies of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, describing them as pivotal for Ghana’s development.
During a visit to the Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, at the Ofori Panin Palace in Kyebi in the Eastern Region, Kufuor urged voters to support Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that his vision and strategies are tailored to alleviate hardships and foster progress.
Affectionately called the “Gentle Giant,” Kufuor used the visit to formally convey his commendations for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh to the Okyenhene.
Reflecting on his tenure as president, Kufuor extol the solid foundation he laid for Ghana by transitioning the nation from a Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) economy to lower-middle-income status.
He also implemented transformative social interventions such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), free maternal healthcare, the capitation grant, and the school feeding program.
This foundation, in line with the NPP’s tradition, has been further built upon under President Nana Akufo-Addo, who introduced the landmark Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and other impactful initiatives.
Former President Kufuor lauded Dr. Bawumia’s inclusive approach to governance, noting his dedication to addressing the suffering of Ghanaians. He expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership capabilities and encouraged Ghanaians to support the NPP in the 2024 elections.
Kufuor also recounted Dr. Bawumia’s significant contributions as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, highlighting his role in achieving a remarkable exchange rate of one cedi to one dollar during his tenure.
Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin praised Kufuor for his dedication to Ghana’s development and urged Ghanaians to heed the former president’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, who accompanied Kufuor, expressed gratitude for the former president’s gesture in presenting his ticket to the Okyenhene. He also thanked the Okyenhene for his blessings, wise counsel, and guidance.
“The spirituality and mystique surrounding this significant exercise are profoundly appreciated and will remain etched in the annals of our political tradition,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh said.
