I Remain Loyal to Dr. Bawumia, Ignore the Rumors- NAPO Clears Air

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has issued a firm denial against circulating rumors suggesting he has switched allegiance to support controversial politician Kennedy Agyapong.

In an exclusive interview with 1957 News monitored by Kumasimail, Dr. Prempeh affectionately known as NAPO addressed the false speculations directly, reaffirming his commitment to Dr. Bawumia.

“It’s not true. I’ve not moved from any camp to any camp. I remain where I am. Can I be ungrateful to Dr. Bawumia after making me his running mate? What kind of human being would be so ungrateful?” Dr. Prempeh declared emphatically.

He elaborated that his actions were aimed at fostering party unity rather than switching loyalties.

Highlighting the divisive nature of the last election cycle, Dr. Prempeh emphasized his efforts to reconcile internal party differences ahead of the upcoming 2028 elections.

“What I’ve done is to try and unite the party against whoever emerges as the flag bearer of the NPP. There is only one person who will emerge, and my experience last election was fraught with infighting, and some individuals, not official flag bearers, made statements that fractured the party. We have learned those lessons. That’s why we are chosen this flag bearer early so we can heal our wounds and move forward,” he explained.

Addressing allegations that he conducted unofficial polls on social media in support of Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Prempeh dismissed the claims, clarifying his limited use of social platforms.

“I’ve seen the posts and heard about them through WhatsApp, as I am not active on social media. But no, I do not conduct polls,” he stated.

When questioned about interactions with Kennedy Agyapong following the rumors, Dr. Prempeh confirmed a recent conversation with the MP for Assin Central, who expressed frustration over misinformation being spread by some of his supporters.

“I spoke with Ken yesterday. He was unaware of what his team posted on social media and was furious when I informed him. We had a candid brotherly conversation. He’s not involved in these activities,” Dr. Prempeh said, underscoring how some individuals within political groups sometimes act independently of their leaders.

Dr. Prempeh also addressed the atmosphere at a recent party event at Legon, where photos depicting various party hopefuls generated speculation.

“My team posted about 20 images capturing moments from the stadium, including the VIP lounge and supposed presidential hopefuls. But let me stress, no one can claim to be a presidential hopeful before the party officially opens nominations. The buzz at Legon was collegial and exciting until some people started misbehaving in ways that don’t promote unity or cooperation,” he noted.

The interview further touched on critiques regarding party leadership giving Dr. Bawumia a platform while allegedly excluding other potential candidates.

“To date, the party has not opened nominations. It is premature to speak about who will run or be given opportunities before that process starts,” Dr. Prempeh countered.

Pressed about rumors that the party may be prematurely engaging with some aspirants, he responded sharply.

“If the party is doing that, then it is wrong. Allowing people to campaign and operate before the official start line. Some who intend to run may not even file when the time comes,” he asserted.
