The Ministry of the Interior has finalised requirements and procedures for granting Ghanaian citizenship to applicants of historic diasporan descent, according to a public announcement by Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD.
In a Facebook post, KOD announced that the new framework, approved by the Ministry of the Interior, outlines the documents, fees and processes required for eligible applicants seeking Ghanaian citizenship under the programme.
According to the announcement, applicants will be required to submit a completed application form, birth certificate, bio-data page of a valid passport, proof of legal residence with a two-year residence permit, police clearance certificates from both their home country and Ghana, evidence of strong ties to Ghana, and proof of DNA confirming Ghanaian descent.
Applicants will also be required to pay a citizenship application fee of GH¢25,000.
The process will begin with the submission of required documents and payment of a GH¢1,500 administrative fee at a designated administrative centre at the World Trade Centre in Accra between February 2 and February 6, 2026.
Shortlisted applicants will then be notified to complete and submit their application forms online.
Following the online submission, applicants will undergo vetting and, upon approval, participate in a citizenship orientation programme with the Diaspora Affairs Office. Successful applicants will subsequently be inducted as Ghanaian citizens at a ceremony scheduled for March 5, 2026, to be presided over by President John Dramani Mahama.
The Ministry noted that qualified applicants would be formally invited to the induction ceremony, with further details on the venue to be communicated in due course.
Applicants have also been advised to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements and prepare the necessary documentation in advance, as all fees paid are non-refundable.
The announcement was jointly issued by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Office of the President, as part of efforts to strengthen ties with the African diaspora and formally integrate eligible persons into Ghanaian citizenship.
