Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Robert Yaw Amankwah, has declared that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, should not be considered as a candidate for future elections.
In an interview with Solid TV, Chairman Amankwah criticized Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy, citing poor electoral performance in the northern region as a key reason.
Chairman Amankwah argued that the worst results the NPP ever recorded in the northern region occurred under Bawumia’s leadership.
He noted that even northerners themselves expressed opposition to his candidacy, questioning the logic of fielding a candidate who lacks support in that crucial area.
“Because he said he’s a northerner and that we will get votes from there but the votes didn’t come and still want us to take him as a candidate again,” Amankwah said.
He further contended that the party should not overlook the political dynamics following the presidency of John Mahama, a northerner, suggesting that Ghanaians are unlikely to elect another northern president soon after Mahama.
“We have a president who is a northerner currently who is President Mahama, from him we are still going there, the same North to choose a candidate from there have you seen that in Ghana before,” he added.
Amankwah also accused some supporters of Bawumia of pursuing selfish interests in the ongoing campaign and expressed doubts about Bawumia’s competence and electability.
“Those following him have their selfish interests,” he said bluntly, warning that the campaign’s momentum may not reflect genuine grassroots support.
He emphasized that the NPP risks losing the 2028 general elections if Bawumia remains the flagbearer, urging the party to reconsider its choices carefully
“NPP should think well and understand how things are going; it won’t be safe to have Bawumia as candidate. We cannot use him as President.
“If he’s competent fine, but tactically will go against us”.
