The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyemfi, has expressed optimism that the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, securing the 8th position on the ballot for the 2024 elections is a symbolic sign that the NDC will “break the 8.”
In an interview on Accra-based Starr FM, Gyemfi stated that the NDC’s placement on the ballot signals the party’s readiness to end the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) eight-year rule.
He emphasized that this would mark the end of what he described as the NPP’s “corruption, mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy, and nepotism,” allowing the NDC to reset the country on the right path.
“The NDC picking number 8 on the ballot paper means we are going to break the NPP’s eight years of poor governance and restore the country to the right direction,” Gyemfi remarked.
Evans Nimako, the NPP’s Director of Elections, picked the party’s number during the EC’s balloting event held in Accra on Friday. The NPP will be featured in a prominent position on the ballot paper.
All People’s Congress (APC) candidate, Hassan Abdulai Ayariga, secured the 9th spot. Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) picked number 5, and Nana Akosua Frimpomaa of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) drew the 7th position.
Earlier, Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, announced that several presidential aspirants had been disqualified from participating in the December 7, 2024, elections due to their failure to correct errors on their nomination forms. Despite being given ample time to address the issues, the disqualified candidates were unable to meet the necessary requirements.
Among those disqualified are Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP).
