Senior Police officer with the Ashanti Central regional command has disclosed that a wrapped substance suspected to be marijuana was found in the pocket of a Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) student who died after reportedly falling from the upper floor of a hostel on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026.
The deceased has been identified as Ransford Amankwah Asomani, a Level 200 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Agribusiness Management student.
Sources close to KNUST management and the police told Kumasi Mail that preliminary investigations suggest the student was smoking with friends on the upper floor of the hostel prior to the incident.
The police who spoke to Kumasi Mail on condition of anonymity, said officers who visited the scene gathered statements from hostel mates of the deceased.
“Our men who visited the scene reported clearly that the deceased and his colleagues were smoking there,” the officer said. “At the hospital, when police searched his pockets, a wrapped substance believed to be weed was found.”
Police indicated that the student allegedly became dizzy during the incident and subsequently fell from the upper floor. He was later pronounced dead after he was rushed to the KNUST hospital also known as Tech Hospital.
The officer emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that a comprehensive report will be released to establish the exact cause of death.
“At the appropriate time, the full investigation report will be made public for everyone to know the exact cause of death,” he added.
The police source further noted concerns about the growing prevalence of marijuana use among some youth, including individuals in uniform. He cited a recent incident involving a police officer who allegedly fell from the upper floor of his residence after becoming dizzy.
“Just recently, one of our officers also fell from the upper floor of his residence after he became dizzy. Luckily for him, he survived and is currently receiving treatment,” he said.
KNUST management, in a statement, confirmed the death of the student but has yet to provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. The university assured parents of the safety of their wards both on and off campus and said additional information would be communicated as investigations continue.
Authorities have urged students to remain calm as police work to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
