The Koforidua High Court on Thursday March 26,2026 sentenced 25 year old Vera Asare tp 12- years imprsionment with hard labour over an acid attack against her boyfriend ,Daniel Omane, which resulted in her death.
The Court had earlier on Wednesday March 13,2026 rejected a 10- year jail sentence recommended for 25 year old Vera Asare in a plea bargaining agreement .
This was after Prosecution submitted a negative pregnancy test result conducted on Vera Asare following earlier request by the court, but, the Judge once again deffered sentencing stating that years recommended under the plea bargaining process for the sentencing is not appriopriate .
The judge directed prosecution to review the recommended jail term upwards in accordance with the provisions.
Vera Asare pleaded guilty to the offence of manslaughter , on March 2, following a plea bargaining agreement between the Office of the Attorney General, the complainant’s family, and defence counsel.
However, the court postponed sentencing to allow for a pregnancy test to be conducted.
Daniel Omane, popularly known as “Anelka,” a mobile phone dealer in Koforidua sustained severe burns to most parts of his body on November 29, 2024, after Vera Asare allegedly poured acid in a gallon on him while he slept in his room.
He was initially taken to Adweso clinic before being moved to the Eastern Regional Hospital and subsequently transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for specialized treatment.
After months of medical care, he succumbed to his injuries on July 15, 2025.
Vera Asare was initially remanded into custody but was later granted bail to care for their child. Following Daniel’s death, she was re-arrested and charged with manslaughter
Investigations revealed that Vera Asare and the deceased had been in a relationship for eight years, characterized by frequent misunderstandings and allegations of infidelity. She confronted and threatened women she suspected were flirting with her boyfriend.
The couple had a three-year-old daughter and had previously lived together. Due to ongoing tensions, Vera’s mother reportedly advised Daniel to rent a separate room for Vera and their child to reduce conflicts — a request he complied with.
According to prosecutors, while Daniel was asleep on the day of the attack, Vera allegedly poured a substance later confirmed by the Ghana Standards Authority to be acid on him.
His screams reportedly attracted the attention of his landlord, who rushed to his aid and transported him to the Adweso Clinic. He was later referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital and subsequently to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department obtained an autopsy report confirming that Daniel Omane died as a result of complications from the acid burns hence charged with manslughter.
The courtroom was filled with relatives and sympathizers of the deceased, many wearing T-shirts bearing his image with inscriptions reading “Justice for Anelka.”
Family members expressed disappointment over the court’s decision to defer sentencing pending a pregnancy test. They cautioned that any attempt to present a fraudulent test result in a bid to reduce or avoid sentencing would be strongly resisted.
