Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has voiced strong disappointment over what he perceives as the undermining of Ghana’s democratic institutions and principles amid the ongoing Kpandai parliamentary election rerun saga.
Addressing his campaign media team, Dr. Bawumia was asked for his perspective on the current political climate in Kpandai and the Electoral Commission’s decision to schedule the election rerun. He responded with concern about the haste and manner in which the process is unfolding.
“To say the least, I’m very very disappointed in what is going on in our country. It looks like our institutions of democracy and our tenets of democracy are being undermined,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He recalled previous election-related legal disputes involving notable politicians such as Dan Abodakpi and Gyakye Quayson, where Parliament allowed the judicial process to run its course before intervening.
He questioned why the Kpandai case involving MP Mathieu Nyindam is being treated differently.
“Mathew Nyindam should be given his day in court. He has filed appeal processes at the High Court, he has filed for a judicial review at the Supreme Court, and none of those cases has been adjudicated. So why the rush? Why the indecent haste?” he asked.
Dr. Bawumia accused authorities of “railroading” Nyindam and argued this approach threatens the pillars of democracy.
“I think that this undermines our institutions of democracy, I think that we should take a halt to these processes and allow him to have his day in court, just as others have done in the past, he stressed adding, “Democracy is something precious that we’ve all had and we’ve all subscribed to. When you start undermining its pillars, you break it down, and the consequences for the nation are very severe.”
He called for a pause in the ongoing processes to allow the courts to fully adjudicate the matter, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles consistently across all cases.
“The house has never really rushed in this way when it came to the other cases. What is the difference with the case of Mathew Nyindam? I think it should not be this case. I think we should uphold the tenets of democracy,” he warned.
Highlighting the dangers of abusing power, Dr. Bawumia said, “And so simply because you have power, you shouldn’t feel that you can ride roughshod over your opponents and over the principles of democracy.”
He expressed solidarity with the minority party in Parliament, commending their efforts to defend democratic principles in the context of the Kpandai election dispute.
“And so I stand with the principles that are espoused by the minority in Parliament, and they’re doing a job at it. And we want to support all the principles that they are fighting over in this particular case,” Dr. Bawumia concluded.
