The Kumasi Kejetia Queen Mothers Association has voiced strong opposition to plans to close the Kejetia Market on December 7, 2024, the day of Ghana’s general elections.
The market closure directive, reportedly initiated by Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne, follows a request from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a recent meeting at the Kumasi Culture Centre.
However, the Queen Mothers claim they rejected the proposal during the meeting, only to learn later that the market management had been instructed to proceed with the closure.
In a statement signed by Nana Wiafe, Vice Chairman of the Kejetia, Central Market, and Abinkyi Market, the group described the directive as harmful to traders’ livelihoods, particularly in light of the current economic hardships and the fact that December 6, 2024, is a public holiday.
“As Market Queen Mothers, we stand against this decision and will fiercely resist any attempt to shut down the market,” the statement said. “We urge the market management to prioritize the welfare of traders and rescind the decision.”
The Queen Mothers are calling on authorities to reconsider the planned closure, emphasizing its potential negative impact on traders’ businesses, many of whom rely on daily earnings to support their families.
Efforts to reach the Kumasi Mayor and market management for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
