The Kumasi Mayor, Samuel Pyne, popularly popularly known as Sam Pyne has commended the Ghanaian environmental cleaning group, BusStopBoyz, for their selfless efforts in cleaning bus stations, market arenas, and other public spaces for free.
At a meeting with the group at the KMA office in Kumasi, the Mayor described them as a “selfless bunch” of individuals who have come together to make a positive impact in their community.
“It’s interesting to find young persons coming together to specialize in cleaning bus stations, market arenas, and others for free,” Mr. Pyne said.
The Mayor shared two inspiring stories from the United States, where selfless individuals donated their fortunes to build a hospital and a flyover, respectively, after experiencing firsthand the need for such infrastructure.
Mr. Pyne advised the group to introduce themselves to city or community authorities before undertaking any cleaning or painting projects, citing cultural and ethical considerations.
“I know you didn’t have any idea about what I am speaking to, but I believe if you had approached us with this idea, we could have collaborated and resourced you better to undertake this laudable course,” he said.
The Mayor presented the group with a box of Wellington Boots and an undisclosed amount of cash as support for their initiative.
He also encouraged them to partner with KMA to benefit from the Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative, which sponsors environmental cleaning projects.
Oheneba Kwadwo Safo, leader of the BuzStopBoyz, explained that the group’s motive is to clean and improve environments, leaving them better than they found them.
He thanked the Mayor for the reception and support, saying, “We are grateful to the Kumasi Mayor and the KMA for showing commitment to our group and for going ahead to provide assistance to us and to seek to build on this partnership to ensure a clean environment in Kumasi”.
