Officials of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) are facing resistance from parents who are reluctant to allow their wards to submit written statements regarding their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
On Wednesday, scores of parents and students gathered at WAEC’s Northern Zonal Office in Kumasi after being invited by officials. The candidates were asked to submit written reports as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected examination irregularities.
A significant number of Core Mathematics results have been withheld by WAEC due to suspicions of malpractice.
However, tensions escalated at the WAEC office when some parents vehemently opposed the requirement for their wards to submit statements, leading to a near-chaotic scene.
Some parents, who had traveled from as far as the Northern and Upper West Regions, expressed their frustrations to the media.
WAEC officials later clarified that the report-writing exercise is voluntary, and parents have the discretion to decide whether their wards should comply.
While some parents stormed out in protest, others eventually agreed to let their children submit their statements.
