Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West and a senior figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s camp, has launched a scathing critique of Ghanaian politicians, accusing them of prioritizing personal gain over national reform.
Ghanaians, he asserted, are “sick and tired” of “suit-wearing, impeccable English-speaking politicians” who dazzle at international forums like the United Nations with eloquent speeches, only to deliver “very sloppy leadership” at home, a pattern he says jeopardizes the youth’s future.
Kwarteng, speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, positioned Agyapong as the antidote.
He endorsed the Assin Central MP as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming presidential primaries on January 31, arguing that Agyapong’s character offers the “political courage” needed to dismantle the status quo.
Drawing from his extensive political resume, Kwarteng lamented the erosion of principled leadership.
“I have been in politics since my student days. I was in TESCON, I was Hon. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu’s special assistant, Government Spokesperson on Finance. I was a Deputy Minister in the first Kufuor administration. I have sat in Parliament as the Finance Committee Chair. I now chair the Budget Committee,” he recounted.
Yet, he expressed deep frustration: “What saddens me is the lack of political courage to confront the problems we have as a country frontally. We have reduced politics almost to ‘come get what you can get for yourself as an individual’… The country will take care of itself.”
Kwarteng charged that politicians’ chief motivation has become “how you can line your own pocket and appropriate the resources of the state for your own purposes.”
True reform, he insisted, demands a leader willing to “disinfect” the broken system, a role he sees only Kennedy Agyapong fulfilling amid a landscape devoid of such resolve.
Pressed by the host on Agyapong’s track record, Kwarteng doubled down stating, “That is not what he has done. It is his character. We are sick and tired of the suit-wearing, impeccable English-speaking politicians who come here, deliver beautiful speeches at the United Nations, and they come home and deliver very sloppy leadership. That continues to plunge the future of our youth into some disadvantage.”
