The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called for the strengthening of mechanisms for resolving chieftaincy disputes, cautioning that unresolved conflicts continue to undermine peace, stability, and development across the country.
The Minister made the call in Ho when he officially opened a two-day capacity-building workshop for members of the Judicial Committees of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs.
The workshop, held at the Regional House of Chiefs Conference Hall, brought together traditional leaders, registrars, and committee members to enhance their skills in dispute adjudication and strengthen the chieftaincy institution.
The Banda Constituency member of Parliament underscored the pivotal role of the Judicial Committees in promoting fairness and maintaining harmony within traditional governance systems.
“The Judicial Committees must be empowered with the knowledge and tools to deliver justice efficiently and effectively. A credible and respected dispute resolution process is key to peace and progress in our communities,” he said.
He warned that prolonged chieftaincy disputes have the potential to destabilize communities, disrupt livelihoods, and derail development projects.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting traditional authorities through reforms aimed at strengthening decentralization and deepening the role of chiefs in national development.
Hon. Ibrahim commended the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, the leadership of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, and other stakeholders for their collaboration in organizing the workshop, urging participants to take full advantage of the opportunity to share experiences and strengthen the traditional justice system.
The two-day training is expected to enhance collaboration among traditional leaders and contribute to peacebuilding and sustainable development in the Volta Region and beyond.
