President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on violence against teachers, assuring that the law will deal firmly with perpetrators of such acts.
The President made the commitment while addressing delegates at the opening of the 7th Quadrennial and 54th Annual National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), following a recent incident at Kade Senior High School in the Eastern Region, where some students allegedly assaulted a mathematics teacher.
The students are reported to have physically attacked the teacher over claims that he had allowed them to cheat during an examination. The incident has sparked public concern about the safety of teachers in schools.
President Mahama condemned the assault and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting teachers, improving their working conditions, and ensuring a safe learning environment across the country. He stressed that violence against educators would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
At the same event, the President announced that government will completely abolish the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2026. He said the move will be implemented through a targeted intervention known as the Ghana Secondary Learning Improvement Project.
According to President Mahama, 100 senior high schools have already reverted to single-track operations. He explained that 2025 and 2026 will serve as the key implementation years for the project, after which no senior high school in the country will operate the shift system.
The double-track system was introduced to manage increased enrolment following the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy but has faced criticism from teachers and parents over its impact on academic quality and school management.
President Mahama assured GNAT members that his administration remains committed to working closely with teacher unions and other stakeholders to improve education delivery and learning outcomes nationwide.
