President John Dramani Mahama has honoured 13 residents of Sikaman-Brofoyedu for their heroic role in retrieving the bodies of victims from the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives earlier this month.
The crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve within the Adansi Akrofrom District, killed several high-ranking government officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
On Wednesday, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, led a delegation to the community on behalf of the President.
He presented a GHS100,000 cash package to the residents who assisted in recovering the bodies, along with an additional GHS20,000 to the Adansi Traditional Council to support traditional rites.
“President Mahama has asked me to thank the residents who helped us recover the bodies of our eight men. Each of you will be honoured with a plaque, and the President is giving you GHS100,000 for your bravery,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah told the community.
In addition to the financial support, he announced that all 13 rescuers would be offered jobs tailored to their skills and capacities. The President has also pledged to undertake key infrastructure projects in the area, beginning with the rehabilitation of local roads.
The gesture has been widely welcomed as a rare and significant acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens during a national tragedy.
