Former President John Dramani Mahama has launched a scathing critique of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, accusing it of widespread economic mismanagement and a deterioration in public trust.
Speaking at a campaign event, Mahama argued that the current administration has failed Ghanaians on multiple fronts, pledging that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would “reset” the country if given the mandate in the upcoming elections.
Former President Mahama described Akufo-Addo’s leadership as “the worst disaster Ghana has ever had,” claiming that despite initial high expectations, the President has overseen a period of significant decline in the nation’s economy and public institutions.
“He created the impression he was the kind of person Ghana needed, but unfortunately, he has been a disaster,” Mahama stated.
The former president criticized what he called the collapse of trust in major public institutions, including the judiciary, which he described as being at “its lowest in history” under the current administration.
He also accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of failing to uphold its commitment to protect public finances, stating, “They promised to protect the public purse, and now they have stolen the whole purse.”
Mahama outlined the NDC’s vision for recovery, pledging a “reset” akin to rebooting a stalled device to bring Ghana back on track. He emphasized that an NDC administration would focus on economic revitalization and prosperity for all Ghanaians, stressing the need to restore public trust and improve living standards.
“Ghana needs a reset, and the NDC will bring prosperity for all of us,” Mahama said, adding that addressing declining salaries and job opportunities would be central to his administration’s agenda. He portrayed the NDC as a party committed to reversing the alleged economic setbacks under Akufo-Addo and restoring hope to Ghanaians across the country.
Mahama’s statement signals a strong campaign focus on the economy, as the NDC seeks to appeal to voters who have grown disillusioned with the current administration’s performance.
As Ghana’s election season heats up, Mahama’s “reset” pledge underscores the stark contrast he is drawing between the NDC and the ruling party’s economic legacy.
