Former President John Dramani Mahama has been labeled as a divisive figure, rendering him unfit to serve as Ghana’s president again, according to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking at a rally in Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua Constituency on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as ‘Napo,’ emphasized the need for a leader who can unite the country. He argued that Mahama’s public statements often create divisions and tension among Ghanaians, which he finds troubling.
“Ghana needs a leader who can bring people together, someone who acts as the father of the nation. Dr. Bawumia has consistently shown himself to be a unifier, which makes him the right person to lead this country,” Napo stated.
He criticized Mahama for allegedly playing the “tribal card” to advance his political ambitions. Napo recalled past comments made by Mahama, where he claimed that the NPP is an Akan-dominated party and suggested that the party would never allow Dr. Bawumia, who hails from the northern region, to lead as their presidential candidate.
“John Mahama once said that the NPP would never allow Dr. Bawumia, a northerner, to lead them as their presidential candidate. But here we are—Dr. Bawumia is now the proud flagbearer of the NPP. What does Mahama have to say now?” Napo questioned, condemning the former president’s remarks.
Napo further stressed that Ghanaians share a common destiny and that there is no place for divisive politics in the country. He urged voters to support Dr. Bawumia, whom he described as a development-oriented leader committed to unifying the nation.
“Dr. Bawumia is not only a unifier but also the leader of a truly national political party. We should all vote for him to unite and lead our country toward prosperity,” Napo concluded.
