President John Dramani Mahama has rolled out a new national programme to boost vegetable production and expand irrigation access, launching the Vegetable Development Project under the Feed Ghana Initiative at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region.
Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, November 27, the President said the initiative is designed to reinforce food security while modernising the vegetable value chain.
He announced that a key component of the project is the construction of a state-of-the-art packhouse to improve grading, sorting, packaging and cold-chain management for produce from beneficiary communities.
Outlining the implementation timeline, President Mahama said the first phase of the project has been structured to finish within 12 months.
He added that government intends to extend the model nationwide, with a particular focus on northern communities where farmers frequently face seasonal water shortages.
“This project has been carefully planned to be completed within 12 months. We will replicate this Vegetable Development Project in many parts of the country, especially in the north, where water availability is a major challenge for most of the year,” he said.
President Mahama also linked the initiative to his broader plan for job creation, noting that improvements in irrigation, storage and value-chain systems will help expand employment in the agricultural sector.
He stated that the government is working toward a 24-hour agricultural economy, which he believes will open up new job avenues, strengthen commercial farming and support long-term sustainable growth.
