Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim following a run of performances that club officials felt fell short of the team’s potential, despite results broadly aligning with pre-season expectations.
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, but there was a growing belief within Old Trafford that the squad was capable of delivering significantly better performances with relatively minor tactical adjustments. As pressure mounted, the situation was deemed untenable by the club’s hierarchy.
On Monday morning at the club’s Carrington training ground, sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada informed Amorim that he had been relieved of his duties.
United have moved swiftly to appoint Darren Fletcher as interim manager. The decision is seen as a logical step, given Fletcher’s deep familiarity with the club and his recent coaching work within the academy setup.
The former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder has held a variety of technical and coaching roles since returning to the club and was appointed Under-18s coach last summer.
In that role, he earned praise for instilling discipline and ensuring young players focused on fundamentals.
Fletcher is also known for favouring a four-man defence and the use of natural wide players, typically deploying a 4-3-3 system an approach viewed by some at the club as better suited to the current squad.
In a move that underlined his professionalism, Fletcher delayed accepting the Under-18s role until his twin sons, Jack and Tyler, had moved out of the age group, citing concerns over a potential conflict of interest.
Ironically, injuries and international call-ups have now left him in charge of a first-team group that includes both players.
Fletcher’s interim appointment comes as United consider their long-term managerial options, with the club keen to stabilise performances and reignite momentum for the remainder of the season.
