The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, has pledged intensified efforts to combat illegal mining during a working visit to Atwima Nwabiagya South in the Ashanti Region.
Dr. Bissiw-Kotei met with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Wisdom Osei Boamah, to discuss collaborative strategies aimed at curbing the growing threat of illegal mining in the area.
She reaffirmed the government’s determination under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama—to clamp down on galamsey activities that are wreaking havoc on the environment and threatening sustainable development.
She expressed concern over the rising number of unemployed youth being manipulated by wealthy individuals who secretly fund and benefit from illegal mining.
To counter this, she revealed plans to introduce advanced monitoring tools, including real-time tracking software, to detect and report illegal mining operations swiftly.
Hon. Boamah welcomed the initiative and disclosed that a dedicated municipal task force has already been established to identify and dismantle illegal mining sites.
He emphasized the need for collective action, particularly community engagement, to support enforcement and promote long-term solutions.
The partnership between the MDF and the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly marks a significant step toward protecting natural resources and fostering responsible mining practices across the region.
