The Executive Director of the Alliance For Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns over the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s decision to appoint a new Director of Investigations at the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).
In a Facebook post, Thompson criticized the move, alleging it was an attempt by the outgoing administration to obstruct investigations into potential misconduct.
“These NPP think they are smart,” Thompson wrote, accusing the government of creating the position to shield their alleged crimes. He claimed that the role of Director of Investigations had not existed at EOCO before, as most investigations were directly overseen by the Executive Director.
Thompson suggested that the outgoing government was rushing to establish the new administrative post, anticipating that the incoming administration would appoint a new Executive Director. He implied that the creation of the position was a strategy to frustrate the work of the incoming leadership at EOCO.
Addressing Madam Leonora Abui Torkornoo, the appointee to the new position and reportedly a relative of the Chief Justice’s husband, Thompson warned her tenure might be short-lived.
“Please be reminded that you will occupy that office for just one week. After January 7th, for your own safety, please don’t step a foot in that office,” he stated in his post.
Thompson’s remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some NDC supporters echoing his concerns, while others have criticized the tone and implications of his post.
The appointment of the Director of Investigations at EOCO comes amidst heightened political tensions as the government transitions to a new administration. Critics argue that such appointments during the final days of an outgoing government can undermine public confidence and raise questions about the motivations behind these decisions.
However, neither EOCO nor the outgoing administration has responded publicly to Thompson’s claims.
