The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticized the Mahama administration over what it describes as a “lawless” raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
The operation, allegedly led by National Security Director of Operations Richard Jakpa, has sparked outrage, with accusations of theft leveled against the security personnel involved.
Addressing the media in Parliament, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin alleged that GH¢10,000 belonging to Dr. Addison, along with his wife’s jewelry, was stolen during the raid. He condemned the incident as an abuse of power and called on President John Mahama to put an end to what he termed as “security excesses” following elections.
“This is the first time in our country’s history that a former Governor of the central bank has been subjected to such treatment. The approach was crude, unlawful, and traumatizing. At the end of the raid, they found nothing, yet they took GH¢10,000 and valuable jewelry belonging to the former governor’s wife,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Effutu MP also questioned the legitimacy of the operation, suggesting that some security personnel used such raids as an opportunity for personal gain. He accused the government of using security agencies to intimidate political opponents and called for accountability in the matter.
Meanwhile, the government and the National Security Ministry have yet to respond to the allegations. However, sources within the security establishment insist that the raid was conducted in line with national security protocols.
The incident has added to growing tensions between the Minority and the Mahama administration over the handling of post-election security matters. The opposition has vowed to take legal and parliamentary action to ensure justice is served.
As the controversy unfolds, pressure is mounting on the government to clarify the circumstances surrounding the raid and address concerns over the alleged misconduct of its security operatives.
