The Government of Ghana has confirmed the repatriation of the mortal remains of Bashiru Isak, the Ghanaian national who was killed in South Africa amid the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
In a statement issued on July 16, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided an update to its earlier release of July 1, confirming that Mr. Isak was the Ghanaian who was fatally shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, a suburb of Cape Town.
The Ministry described Mr. Isak as a law-abiding citizen and a devoted father of three, adding that the confirmation contradicts earlier claims made by some South African officials regarding his identity.
With the consent of the bereaved family, the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Pretoria, facilitated the return of Mr. Isak’s remains. His body arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 6:40 p.m., where it was received by family members and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being transferred to the 37 Military Hospital.
The Ministry said the Government’s thoughts and prayers remain with Mr. Isak’s family as they mourn their profound loss.
To establish the exact circumstances surrounding the killing, the Government and the deceased’s family have agreed to conduct an independent autopsy. The decision follows unsuccessful efforts by Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and the family to obtain an official autopsy report from South African authorities.
The Government has renewed its call for a thorough investigation into the killing, urging South African authorities to expedite investigations, arrest those responsible, and ensure their prosecution.
“There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr. Isak,” the Ministry stated.
Following the independent autopsy, Mr. Isak will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic customs.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all available diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure justice is served.
The Ministry concluded by extending its deepest condolences to Mr. Isak’s parents, wife, children, relatives, friends, and all loved ones affected by his death.
