The Movement for Change, a political movement founded by former Minister of Trade and Industry John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, is set to officially transition into a political party today, according to Mr. Joseph Amoah, a close aide to Mr. Kyerematen in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Amoah confirmed that the group will unveil the new party’s name, logo, and founding members this afternoon at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra.
The event is expected to attract leading figures of the movement, supporters, and members of the media.
The Movement for Change was formed in 2023 after Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), resigned from the ruling party following his withdrawal from the NPP’s flagbearer race.
He cited issues of unfair treatment and what he described as a lack of internal democracy within the NPP as reasons for his departure.
Alan Kyerematen, who served as Minister of Trade and Industry under both former President John Agyekum Kufuor and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, launched the movement as a “grassroots-driven platform” aimed at offering Ghanaians an alternative to the country’s two dominant political parties the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The transition of the Movement for Change into a fully fledged political party marks a major step in Alan Kyerematen’s efforts to contest the 2024 general elections independently of the NPP.
The group’s signature symbol, the butterfly, represents what Alan Kyerematen has described as “transformation and renewal” in Ghana’s political landscape.
Political analysts say the new party could reshape the dynamics of Ghana’s upcoming elections, especially among voters seeking an alternative to the traditional two-party system.
