MTN Ghana has committed US$2 million to the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations in support of the Government of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme.
The funding is intended to support the training of one million Ghanaians in coding and other digital skills, with a focus on preparing young people for participation in the digital economy and related employment opportunities.
The commitment follows discussions held last year on the sidelines of the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona between MTN Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita, Vice President for Ghana, Southern and East Africa Ebenezer Asante, Stephen Blewett, and officials of the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations. The engagements centered on public–private collaboration in digital skills development and innovation.
Explaining the company’s decision to support the programme in a statement issued on Wednesday January 28, 2026, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, said, “At MTN Ghana, youth empowerment is a critical priority. Africa has the youngest population in the world, offering Ghana an unprecedented opportunity to equip its youth with future-fit digital skills. Through our support for the One Million Coders Programme, we are creating pathways for young people to acquire new skills, embrace innovation, and access opportunities in the digital economy. When we invest in our youth, we invest in the long-term prosperity and sustainability of our nation.”
He added that equipping young people with digital skills aligns with MTN’s view that technology should promote inclusive growth.
The One Million Coders Programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations as part of Ghana’s broader digitalisation agenda. The programme is expected to build a pool of digital talent to support public-sector reform, private-sector expansion, entrepreneurship, and job creation. Officials say the initiative could improve productivity and innovation while enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
MTN Ghana says its support for the programme aligns with the MTN Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, particularly in the areas of digital inclusion, education, and youth development.
Beyond the US$2 million contribution, MTN Ghana is also working with the Government of Ghana on plans to establish a US$25 million ICT Centre, intended to serve as a hub for innovation, skills development, and digital collaboration.
Separately, the MTN Ghana Foundation continues to support digital education initiatives across the country, including the Ministry’s Girls in ICT programme.
MTN Ghana says these initiatives form part of its broader efforts to support skills development and technology-driven socio-economic growth in Ghana through partnerships with public institutions.
