MTN Ghana has launched a new Self-Service SIM Swap platform, allowing customers to replace their SIM cards independently without visiting service centres.
The service was officially launched on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at MTN’s Tishegu office in Tamale.
Speaking on behalf of the General Manager for the Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, MTN representative Samuel Appiah said the innovation would transform how customers access SIM replacement services.
“Today we are proud to give our customers the freedom to complete this essential service conveniently, securely and independently from wherever they are, without the need to travel or queue at a service centre,” he said.
According to MTN, SIM swap is one of the most common services requested by customers. According to the company, about 250,000 SIM swaps are processed every month at MTN customer service centres across the country.

Mr. Mingle noted that while the high number reflects the importance of mobile connectivity, it also highlights the inconvenience customers face when they must travel and wait in long queues.
“SIM swap remains a major reason for customers engaging with us, both digitally and in person. On average, we process about 250,000 SIM swaps at our customer service centres every month,” he said.
He explained that the new system allows customers to perform SIM swaps anytime and from anywhere in the world, particularly when a device is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Before the nationwide rollout, MTN conducted a four-month pilot programme from October 2025 to January 2026 using its mobile app and USSD channels.
“In just four months, over 18,000 customers successfully completed SIM swaps on their own or through assisted options at our branches,” Mr. Mingle said, adding that customer feedback during the trial period was overwhelmingly positive.

The telecom company emphasized that security is central to the new service, which uses biometric facial verification to confirm the identity of the SIM owner.
“Our self-service SIM swap uses advanced biometric facial verification, ensuring that only the rightful owner can request a swap. This significantly reduces fraud and protects against risks associated with cloned or compromised ID cards,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Northern Zonal Manager of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Inusah Salman Faris, described the initiative as a step forward in improving customer convenience in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
“The telecommunications sector continues to play a critical role in Ghana’s socio-economic development. Reliable and accessible communication services support business growth, financial inclusion, education and social connectivity,” he said.
Mr. Faris said the introduction of the self-service SIM swap would allow customers to replace their SIM cards quickly and efficiently without unnecessary inconvenience.

“This initiative will greatly improve customer experience while reducing waiting times and making services more accessible,” he noted.
He commended MTN Ghana for investing in innovative solutions that respond to the changing needs of customers.
“Such initiatives align with our broader objective of encouraging digital transformation and improving service delivery across the telecommunications ecosystem,” he added.
However, Mr. Faris emphasized the need for strict adherence to regulatory requirements, particularly those relating to SIM registration and customer identification, to safeguard the telecommunications network.
“These measures are essential in safeguarding the integrity of our telecommunications network and protecting users from fraud and other security threats,” he said.
MTN believes the innovation will reduce reliance on agent-assisted SIM swaps and shift customer interactions away from physical queues.
“This is digital empowerment in action. It is customer-driven innovation at its best and our vision of freedom in a connected Ghana,” Mr. Mingle said.
He added that the platform will provide 24-hour access to SIM replacement services, faster service restoration, and improved protection against fraud and unauthorized access.
“As we celebrate national independence, we are also celebrating independence in service – the freedom to swap your SIM without ever needing to visit or contact a service agent,” he said.
MTN says the self-service SIM swap platform forms part of its broader effort to enhance digital convenience, security and customer control across its services in Ghana.
