The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has announced plans to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations at public events and entertainment venues across the country during the festive season.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission said the operations will target nightclubs, pubs, entertainment centres and other public gatherings nationwide as part of efforts to curb drug abuse, trafficking and the distribution of illicit substances.
According to NACOC, the festive season is typically associated with increased social activities, which heighten the risk of drug use and related offences.
The Commission said the intensified surveillance is aimed at safeguarding public health, safety and security during the period.
The operations, the statement noted, will be conducted in collaboration with other law enforcement and regulatory agencies where necessary.
Areas of focus include detecting and preventing the sale and use of illicit drugs, ensuring compliance with national narcotics laws, and educating patrons and operators on the dangers associated with drug abuse.
NACOC has urged event organisers, venue owners and managers to cooperate fully with authorised officers and to take proactive steps to keep their premises drug-free.
Members of the public have also been encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug use or trafficking.
The Commission assured the public that all operations will be carried out professionally and with full respect for human rights, while maintaining a firm stance against narcotics-related offences.
“Working together, we can ensure a safe, healthy and enjoyable festive season for all,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by PNCO Francis Opoku Amoah, Acting Director of Public Affairs and International Relations. NACOC can be reached on 0800 307 307 for further information.
