The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has cautioned political actors, party leaders, and the general public to desist from carrying or using any form of weapon during the forthcoming Akwatia Constituency by-elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 24, 2025, the commission stressed that the display or use of lethal and non-lethal weapons including firearms, improvised weapons, tasers, pepper spray, knives, and machetes will not be tolerated.

It warned that anyone found with a weapon would be arrested and prosecuted.

NACSA noted that Ghana’s democratic progress must be safeguarded from politically motivated violence, which it said is often fueled by inflammatory rhetoric and the unlawful possession of arms during electoral periods. Such acts, the commission warned, threaten peace and stability.

“We strongly remind all political stakeholders that such conduct not only violates Ghana’s laws but also undermines the very foundation of our democratic process,” the statement read.

The commission urged politicians and party leaders to set a positive example by encouraging supporters to express their choices peacefully and lawfully.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, the National Security Council, civil society organizations, and other partners to ensure a peaceful election.

NACSA further called on all stakeholders to prioritize peace, uphold the rule of law, and ensure Ghana remains safe and secure before, during, and after the Akwatia by-elections.
