The Nanton District Assembly has handed over 450 school desks to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address acute furniture shortages in public basic schools across the district.
The desks—made up of 200 dual desks and 250 mono desks—were officially presented by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Rosina Zenabu Abdul Rahaman, at a brief ceremony in Nanton on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Officials of the District Education Directorate, traditional authorities, assembly members and headteachers were present.
Hon. Rosina Zenabu Abdul Rahaman said the intervention is a deliberate step to improve learning conditions and aligns with the government’s Resetting Agenda being pursued by President John Dramani Mahama.
“This presentation is not just about desks; it is about restoring dignity to our classrooms and creating an environment that supports effective teaching and learning. It forms part of the broader Resetting Agenda of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, which seeks to reposition education as a driver of national transformation,” the DCE said.
She stressed that education remains a top priority for the Assembly and described the desk distribution as a direct response to reports of pupils sitting on bare floors or sharing inadequate furniture, a situation she said undermines effective teaching and learning.
According to the DCE, the inclusion of mono desks is intended to improve learner comfort and promote inclusivity, particularly for pupils who require individual seating arrangements.
Hon. Rosina assured the Ghana Education Service that the desks would be distributed strictly on the basis of assessed needs across schools in the district. She also charged school authorities to ensure proper use and maintenance to prolong the lifespan of the furniture.
The DCE further commended teachers and education administrators for what she described as their “commitment and resilience” in the face of logistical challenges, and reaffirmed the Assembly’s resolve to continue investing in educational infrastructure.
Receiving the desks on behalf of the GES, the District Director of Education expressed appreciation to the Nanton District Assembly and the central government, describing the support as timely. He said the desks would significantly reduce furniture deficits in basic schools and improve classroom learning conditions.
Parents and community members who witnessed the handover also welcomed the intervention, describing it as a clear signal of government’s commitment to strengthening basic education at the grassroots.
The desk supply forms part of the Nanton District Assembly’s broader investment in human capital development under the government’s Resetting Agenda, which seeks to improve public service delivery and lay a solid foundation for sustainable socio-economic growth.
