Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NPP, has criticized the opposition NDC for what he described as a slap in the face of Ghanaians, following the NDC’s decision to launch a lawless vigilante group on the very day the nation witnessed the launch of a National Peace Campaign ahead of Election 2024.
Speaking at a community engagement in Duadaso, in the Jaman North Constituency of the Bono Region, as part of his campaign tour, Dr. Prempeh condemned the conduct of the NDC and urged Ghanaians to vote wisely for a political party that values peace.
Dr. Prempeh, however, expressed no surprise at the NDC’s actions last Sunday. According to him, “the NDC does not care about development and the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian. They only want your vote, and if that means plunging this country into civil war so they can win elections, they wouldn’t mind,” he noted.
Napo, as he is affectionately called, reinforced his point by citing the launch of a vigilante group by the NDC, named the “Ashanti Region Azorka Boys,” ahead of the 2024 elections despite the passage of an anti-vigilante law, which proscribes all vigilante groups and recommends severe punishment for lawbreakers.
Napo also cited a statement by the NDC’s presidential candidate, H.E. John Mahama, whom he said is on record as boasting about the revolutionary roots of the NDC and claiming that, when it comes to unleashing violence, no political party could match them [the NDC]. He assured John Mahama that the NPP is a peace-loving party and will not compete with the NDC on violence, but on ideas.
His campaign tour also took him to the Berekum West Constituency, where he interacted with the chiefs and people of Jinijini. He said Dr. Bawumia remains steadfast in his commitment to forging a new partnership for development with traditional authorities at every step of the journey.
He noted that a future Bawumia administration will prioritize the welfare of traditional authorities, recognizing them as essential partners in the work of nation-building. He used the opportunity to also canvass for the NPP based on their record in government.
The Chief of Jinijini, Nana Asare Baffour, expressed immense gratitude to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for bringing massive development to the district within seven years of its creation. The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Kwaku Agyenim Boateng, also spoke. In fulfillment of a pledge made to the Berekum Traditional Council at their request during his campaign tour of the Bono Region, he presented a bus on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s behalf during a courtesy call on the council. This gesture aims to enhance their mobility and support the smooth performance of their vital duties.
