The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintali, In a dramatic revelation, has accused Professor Dr. Paul Yao Opoku Mensah, the General Overseer of the National Cathedral, of receiving monthly payments from the government for work allegedly not done.
Speaking on TV3 breakfast show, monitored by Kumasi mail, Basintali disclosed that Professor Opoku Mensah had been drawing a monthly salary of GHS 21,134 despite the suspension of the National Cathedral project in 2022.
Brandishing bank statements and pay slips, Basintali claimed that Professor Mensah continued to receive payments through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
The documents reportedly show transactions from an Absa Bank account in the Tamale branch, with detailed salary payments made for his role as Executive Secretary of the National Cathedral project.
Basintali further alleged that these payments were made despite the fact that the National Cathedral remains incomplete, with the project site still undeveloped.
He criticized the authorities for failing to take action against Professor Mensah and other officials involved in the project, whom he accused of siphoning funds from the state.
“I challenge Professor Opoku Mensah to take me to court if these allegations are false. We are heading to the Office of the Special Prosecutor today to demand his arrest,” Basintali stated emphatically.
In response, media outlets, including Media General, distanced themselves from the disclosure of personal bank details, questioning the legality of revealing such sensitive information publicly.
Basintali promised further revelations about others allegedly receiving payments for no work done under the Cathedral project, vowing to continue his efforts to hold those involved accountable.
The National Cathedral project has faced numerous controversies since its inception, with ongoing concerns about transparency and financial management.
