The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat will on Monday, January 26, 2026, begin a special joint security operation across Greater Kumasi to clamp down on commercial transport operators charging illegal fares.
The exercise will be led by the Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari, and will involve more than 20 personnel from the regional office, supported by officers drawn from various district security units within the metropolis.
According to National Security, the operation will target commercial drivers, conductors and loading boys who unlawfully increase transport fares.
Persons arrested during the exercise will be handed over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.
The operation is expected to run for 14 hours daily across Greater Kumasi and will continue until there is a noticeable change in the behaviour of commercial transport operators, particularly trotro drivers.
To reduce the impact of the enforcement exercise on commuters, National Security, in collaboration with Metro Mass Transit, is expected to deploy at least 10 Metro Mass buses to transport passengers from selected communities in Greater Kumasi to Kejetia and other destinations.
Speaking to Kumasi Mail ahead of the operation, Capt. (Rtd.) Jabari stressed that the exercise is not intended to punish transport operators but to instil discipline and ensure respect for the rule of law.
“As a transport operator, you have no right to take the law into your own hands by increasing transport fares,” he said. “That is a sign of indiscipline, and it must not be tolerated. There is no justification for such practices, and that is why we are moving to stop them.”
Authorities say the operation forms part of broader efforts to protect commuters and maintain order within the commercial transport sector in the Ashanti Regional capital.
