The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chair by Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has rejected reports that senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are allegedly planning to lead Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to seek forgiveness from President John Dramani Mahama.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the NDC expressed firm opposition to any such move, warning the NPP leadership to “abandon such intentions immediately.”
The statement follows recent media reports suggesting that key NPP officials may be arranging a reconciliation meeting between Chairman Wontumi and the President.
While no formal confirmation has been made by the NPP, the reports have stirred reactions across the political spectrum.
The party’s Ashanti regional Chairman Augustus Andrew Nana Akwasi questioned the motive behind the purported plea, asking whether it was linked to Chairman Wontumi’s past “insults” directed at President Mahama during the NPP’s time in office or related to his current legal troubles.
“What exactly is he going to plead for? Is it regarding the numerous insults he directed at President Mahama during the tenure of the NPP government, or is it in connection with his current legal issues?” he asked.
He further criticized what he described as the silence of NPP elders when Chairman Wontumi allegedly insulted President Mahama and his family. “Where were these so-called elders when Chairman Wontumi was shamelessly insulting the President and his family? Did they condemn his despicable conduct, or were they the ones encouraging him?” the statement read.
Making his position unequivocally clear, the NDC regional chairman said no access would be granted to the NPP elders for such an engagement, describing the move as “inappropriate and unacceptable.”
“This attempt at damage control is both inappropriate and unacceptable,” Nana Akwasi concluded.
