The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament has announced its firm intention to uphold its current majority status in the chamber as Members of Parliament (MPs) return to the House on Thursday.
This follows Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recall of Parliament under Article 112 (3) of the Constitution, prompted by a request from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus.
The Speaker had previously suspended proceedings indefinitely two weeks ago, following escalating tensions between the Legislature and the Judiciary over a dispute concerning vacant parliamentary seats.
Mr. Bagbin confirmed he would preside over Thursday’s session and assured his commitment to upholding due process.
Speaking at a press briefing, NDC Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza reiterated the caucus’s commitment to maintaining its majority stance in the chamber.
Agbodza emphasized that, although the NDC caucus is prepared to engage in government business, it will not yield its seating position or acknowledge any shift in majority status until a formal determination on the disputed seats is resolved.
He further called on the NPP caucus to assume a cooperative, minority position to allow for the smooth conduct of parliamentary business.
“Our position is clear: we will not cede our rightful place in the chamber. We call on the NPP caucus to peacefully accept the minority role if they are committed to the successful execution of parliamentary duties,” Agbodza stated.
The Adaklu MP also expressed hope that parliamentary business would focus on initiatives that serve the interests of the Ghanaian people.
He assured that the NDC caucus remains open to collaboration on policies and legislative agendas that prioritize public welfare and national development.
As Parliament reconvenes, all eyes will be on the House to see if the NPP will accede to the NDC’s majority position or challenge it, further intensifying political dynamics. The outcome could have significant implications for future parliamentary proceedings and government policy-making.
