The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its handling of Ghana’s economy, accusing the ruling party of mismanagement.
Kwetey asserted that the NDC had left behind a robust and sound economy when it exited office in 2016, but claims that nearly eight years of NPP governance have led to economic decline.
Speaking at the NDC’s manifesto launch on Saturday, August 24, at the University of Education, Winneba, Kwetey argued that the NPP should be voted out for bringing the economy to its current state.
“When we left office in 2016, we handed over a sound economy to the NPP,” Kwetey stated. “This economy was characterized by sustainable public debt, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 55.6 percent, a stable credit rating of B-, a low budget deficit of 6.1 percent, and a declining inflation rate of around 15 percent.”
He continued, “We also handed over a currency depreciation rate of about 9.6 percent, a strong manufacturing sector, two massive oil fields, and a thriving cocoa sector. Today, all of these gains have been eroded under the NPP’s watch.”
