Haruna Iddrisu, the former Minority Leader and current Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, has expressed confidence that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will become the new majority in Ghana’s Parliament by Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
He disclosed that a crucial constitutional maneuver planned for the upcoming parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 15, could shift the balance of power in favor of the NDC.
Iddrisu explained that the NDC intends to invoke Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution, a move that, if successful, will disqualify four MPs who have declared their intention to run as independent candidates in the 2024 general elections.
Citing parliamentary standing orders and constitutional provisions, he emphasized that MPs cannot retain their seats while contesting as independents.
“The Constitution is clear that MPs cannot simultaneously hold their seats and declare independent candidacies,” Iddrisu asserted, noting that this legal interpretation could strip these MPs of their seats, thereby altering the current makeup of Parliament in favor of the NDC.
If this legal action is successful, the NDC will shift from its current minority status to a majority position in Parliament, which would significantly enhance the party’s influence ahead of the 2024 elections.
Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks have garnered significant attention, with political analysts and stakeholders anticipating a critical and potentially transformative parliamentary session next week.
