Former President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to establish a new university in the Western North Region if elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking during a campaign event in Dadieso, Mahama emphasized the urgent need for enhanced educational infrastructure in the area, aligning with the NDC’s goal of ensuring each region has at least one university.
Reflecting on his previous tenure, Mahama noted that the NDC had successfully built several universities in underserved regions, including the University of Health and Allied Sciences and the University for Development Studies.
“The NDC’s policy is to have a public university in every region”
“When we were in power, we built the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Volta Region, the University of Environment in the Eastern Region, the University for Development Studies (UDS), and the University of Energy and Renewable Natural Resources in Brong Ahafo”.
He reassured community members that land set aside for educational purposes would be considered for future university projects, reinforcing the NDC’s commitment to regional development and access to higher education.
“Now that we’ve six new regions in addition, we plan to build universities or university campuses in each of them. When the time comes to construct these universities, and what Nana said that our region hasn’t received anything but has land for tertiary education, we’ll consider it, and with God’s permission, we’ll bring the university there”
