Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured small-scale miners of the party’s commitment to fostering responsible mining practices.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Seyerano, within the Sefwi Juaboso constituency in the Western North Region, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the NPP’s plan to support small-scale miners with essential machinery, financial backing, and technical training.
He stated that the next NPP government, led by Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, would prioritize eco-friendly mining practices to reduce environmental impact.
Addressing a gathering of Chiefs, Queen Mothers, religious leaders, community groups, and residents at a durbar in Seyerano, Dr. Prempeh made a compelling case for electing Dr. Bawumia as president on December 7. He urged constituents to vote in large numbers for the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, especially given the numerous challenges posed by the NDC minority in Parliament.
Dr. Prempeh stressed that the NPP government is committed to curbing illegal mining, which has led to significant environmental degradation. He emphasized, however, that while the NPP supports mining as a vital economic activity, it will not tolerate irresponsible practices that harm the environment and local communities.
On the campaign trail, Dr. Prempeh also visited students at the College of Health in Sefwi Asafo, where he highlighted the NPP’s achievements in education, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
He reminded students that their allowances, canceled under former President John Mahama, had been reinstated by the NPP. Dr. Prempeh urged students to support the party that introduced Free SHS and restored their allowances, instead of voting for candidates he claims now “promise change.”
Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted the progress in female education. “In 2016, for every 100 males attending school, only 67 females were enrolled. Today, that number has increased to 107 females for every 100 males,” he stated, promising that this positive trend will continue under the leadership of Dr. Bawumia.
Meanwhile, a Queen Mother from the Bia East Constituency expressed her dissatisfaction with the current NDC MP’s performance, stating that she would resign if he could point to any significant development project he has brought to the community. She criticized the MP as ineffective, claiming that all major community improvements have come under the NPP’s leadership.
Alex Tetteh, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Akontombra, also addressed the crowd, echoing calls for continued support of the NPP to sustain development in the Western North Region.
