Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has firmly dismissed speculation about contesting for the party’s National Chairmanship position, declaring his intention to seek re-election in his current role.
In an exclusive interview on Woezor TV monitored by Kumasimail, Kwetey responded to the host’s question on his ambitions ahead of the NDC’s internal elections next year:“Next year, hopefully, the NDC will go back to the polls. What’s your ambition?”
Kwetey emphasized his commitment to continuity, crediting his leadership for the party’s landmark victory in the recent general elections.
“When you’ve been right in the very heart of ensuring that we deliver the kind of victory that we’ve delivered, but not only that, victory that also is anchored on a major promise, which is a promise of resetting the country. And you see the beginning of the process that we are seeing in terms of ensuring that we bring about that gradual transformation,” he stated.
He added that the process extends beyond governance to revitalizing the party’s internal structures.
“I intend definitely to run again, to continue to be the General Secretary of the party,” he declared adding “because I feel we’ve just started a process and this process needs to be deepened, needs to be anchored.”
“But this process is not only just at the level of governance, it’s also at the level of the party, where the whole orientation of the party needs to become even much, much better,” Mr. Kwetey emphasized.
Kwetey stressed the primacy of party loyalty, urging members to prioritize collective interests.
“We need to have a party where individuals simply understand that the party is always number one. Therefore, at every moment, it is the duty of everyone to ensure that we do things that will make the party better and better.”
The NDC’s internal polls, expected in 2026, come amid the party’s consolidation of power following its decisive win over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in December 2024.
Kwetey’s decision quells rumors fueled by his high-profile role in the campaign, which promised economic reset and anti-corruption reforms now underway.
