President John Dramani Mahama has urged all Ghanaians to actively engage in holding public officials, including himself, accountable as part of their civic responsibility.
He emphasized that no one, regardless of position, is above the law, highlighting the critical need for ethical leadership and responsible governance in Ghana.
Speaking at the Christian Service of the National Thanksgiving Day held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra, President Mahama underscored that public office is a sacred trust granted by the people, not a privilege for personal enrichment.
He called on citizens to demand integrity and humility from those in authority.
“We must hold those in authority including myself accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility,” President Mahama declared. “Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and the responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable among us.”
The President further stressed that even the highest office in the land is subject to the rule of law.
“Even the office of the president, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law. Leadership must be grounded in justice, honesty, and a reverence for God. If we want a just Ghana, we must be just in leadership,” he added.
Highlighting the true measure of a nation’s greatness, President Mahama remarked, “A nation’s greatness is not measured by the heights of its skyscrapers or the size of its budget; the values of its people are the true measure of a nation’s greatness.”
The National Thanksgiving Day Christian Service is a first-of-its-kind annual event that brings together government officials, religious leaders, and citizens to reflect on Ghana’s progress and renew their commitments to national development.
